Judge's gavel

Deadlines in Mexican litigation are short. Act early.

Whether you need to collect, enforce a contract or answer a lawsuit, the first days decide a lot: evidence, precautionary measures and the deadline to respond. We review the file, map the risks and build the strategy.

  • Answering the complaint and counterclaims
  • Commercial and civil lawsuits to collect or enforce contracts
  • Precautionary measures and asset protection
  • Appeals and amparo before federal courts

Buying in Mexico's restricted zone, in plain English

Mexico's Constitution limits direct foreign ownership of land within 50 km of the coast and 100 km of the borders. The whole Riviera Maya is inside that zone. Foreigners can still buy legally and securely through one of two structures.

Bank trust (fideicomiso)

A Mexican bank holds title on your behalf and you keep every right of an owner: use, rent, sell or leave the property to your heirs. The trust runs for up to 50 years and can be renewed. It requires a permit from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mexican company

For non-residential or business use, a Mexican company with foreign shareholders can hold title directly, after registering the property with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It brings accounting and tax obligations, so it suits investors running a business.

Who the notary works for

A Mexican notario público is a government-appointed lawyer who formalizes the deed and checks certain legal requirements. The notary is impartial and does not negotiate terms or protect your interests against the seller.

Frequently asked questions

Can you represent me while I live in the U.S. or Canada?

Yes. Most matters run on video calls and email. When we need to act in your name, you sign a power of attorney before a notary at home (then apostilled) or at a Mexican consulate.

Do you handle cases outside Cancún?

Yes. We work throughout Quintana Roo, including Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, Bacalar and Chetumal, before both local and federal courts.

Can you handle the licenses and permits to open my business?

Yes. We identify the municipal, state and federal permits your hotel, restaurant or business needs, prepare and file the applications, follow them up with each authority, and represent you if an inspection results in a fine or closure.

Do I need my own lawyer if there's already a notary?

In most cases, yes. The notary formalizes the deed and checks certain legal requirements but stays neutral. The notary won't negotiate for you, review the developer's contract in your interest, or pursue the seller if something goes wrong.

How long does a lawsuit take in Mexico?

It depends on the type of proceeding, how the other side responds and the court's workload. After reviewing your documents we give you a realistic estimate in writing, and we always assess whether a negotiated settlement can get you there faster.

Do you practice U.S. or Canadian law?

No. We are licensed in Mexico and advise on Mexican law. When your matter also touches U.S. or Canadian law or taxes, we coordinate with your attorney or accountant at home.

What should I bring to the first consultation?

Your contracts, proof of every payment, any notices or lawsuits you've received, emails or messages with the other side, and any photos, reports or permits you have.
